Empowering
Communities

We empower rural, off-grid communities in sub-Saharan Africa by developing sustainable energy and clean water projects.

Power to The Communities

July 5
Why

Power and water form the foundation to build an evolving society. Without sustainable access to electricity and water, commerce and industry are unable to flourish, and opportunities to earn an income are limited. By delivering affordable, reliable, sustainable access to clean electricity and water, we unlock the power of the people, and stimulate the evolution of developing communities.

Jan 2020
How

We work in partnership with governments to understand their country’s needs and determine how to structure engagement to ensure alignment and bankability of projects. Once we have developed related investment opportunities, we work with funding, technical and EPC partners to execute the scope of works. We receive a development fee and ownership in every project that we develop, and continuously support the projects until the end of the Concession period.

Jan 2020
What

We develop and implement renewable energy and clean water projects to empower disenfranchised communities. We focus on the social returns, while ensuring profitability. We earn success fees to develop impactful projects and maintain meaningful ownership and operational oversight of every project we develop. Given the speed at which technology can evolve, we have taken a technologically agnostic approach, and continuously assess new technologies for deployment into our projects to improve delivery and affordability/profitability. We work with local partners who share our values and passion to empower local communities across their country. Our local partners know how to navigate the myriad human networks to successfully build projects while avoiding corruption.

We also enable small businesses to launch, by delivering reliable, affordable electricity to communities for as little as $1 (lights for 2 weeks). Water systems require electricity, and we work with partners to deliver access to clean water to communities served. With a coalition of partners, we develop and implement women empowerment initiatives to help women and their daughters to develop commercially useful skillsets, and ultimately better support their families.

Where

We have developed pilot projects and continue to serve communities in Angola, but we are currently focused on developing projects in Mozambique. Through our local entity and partnerships, we are mandated to develop rural electrification and clean water projects to serve +1.500 communities across the country (~4 million people). Jointly with our partners, we have implemented pilot-projects to bring energy to +50 rural hospitals, and to the community of Mabime, located in the province of Inhambane.

We have also engaged with our first development partner (ARC Power), and formed a JV named ARC Power MoTeal. ARC Power MoTeal leverages the experience of ARC Power, which was gained by developing mini-grids in Rwanda, and will help us to develop 500 communities across Mozambique together. This is a landmark achievement, and the first community (Maqueze, province of Gaza) will be electrified in 2023!

Jan 2020
Where are we going

We have A LOT of work to do in Mozambique and Angola to serve millions of people, but we are excited to scale our model to other countries that suffer from a lack of sustainable access to clean power and water in due course.
